A century ago, the Lithuanian people had to use all their ingenuity, will and courage to defend and nurture the extremely fragile idea of independence and create their own independent state. The graphic novel “War Aviators” is a roman à clef genre story about a small group of individuals who were completely dedicated to the goal of defending their newly restored state from enemies. On the eve of the Great War, favorable conditions arose to restore the independence of our country. However, at the beginning of independence, the entire country, including the newly formed army, suffered great deprivation. The civil and military authorities of Lithuania made a principled decision to establish aviation forces and use this perhaps the most innovative military tool of that era in the fight for the country’s independence. This graphic novel depicts the adventures of the first Lithuanian aviators – success and disappointment on the ground and in the skies while fighting for independence in 1919-1920.
